Aachener Nachrichten
Kosmische Magie: Aachen.

Karlheinz Stockhausen

Why is it that in the last while thousands of people in Rome and London have been celebrating the fantastic acoustic space installations and sculptures of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s electronic music, the last time in the London’s Royal Albert Hall? It must be something quite exceptional, the spatial acoustics of the octophonic technique that surround the listener with happenings which veritably haunt the room dispersed within the four walls: roaming, racing, rotating, making their impact from all sides, from above, from way above, from below … Certainly, electronic music is everywhere these days, but with Stockhausen it is a bit more complex: there are no repetitions, no easy or rhythmic beat pulsating over a longer period of time. However, for anyone who can experience these fantastic works and let the acoustic and visual patterns and pictures take shape within, the rewards are more than rich: the outcome is a sonorous, momentous mass. And then again quite subtle. Listening to Stockhausen’s electronic music stereophonically on the radio, only a mere fraction of the expressive scope of these works can be grasped. However, later you will be able to come to terms with the music of today’s electronic scene with completely different ears.
